A Walk on the Night Side

Alice was hired on to do a bit of investigation work into a wealthy girl's disreputable boyfriend. The girl, Niki Saunders, is into the goth vampire scene as a form of rebellion. She goes to a club called Fangs. She also picked up a small white terrier, who showed up and declared himself Alice's dog.

The club is a hive of low self esteem and teen angst, and Theo and Alice are a bit over the average age of the crowd. Nike was there with her friend Julie. They met Julie's boyfriend, a vampire poseur in a bad velvet cape. While they are waiting for the bad seed, Iggy, to show up, Theo saw an old enemy, Vincent Santiago, the right hand man of Don Korino.

Santiago headed over to Theo's table to brace him, and probably throw him out of the club. A bit of quick thinking on Theo's part put a Forgetfulness spell on Santiago, who walked on past without noticing him.

Iggy chose that moment to make his appearance, stepping out of the shadows to grab Niki, who squealed in delight. Neither Alice nor Theo failed to notice that Iggy moved pretty fast. Alice also noticed that he was stunningly gorgeous (vampires are not especially beautiful in this setting).

Owing to Theo's quick thinking in not getting them thrown out of the club, they were able to follow the couples when they left. They attempted to tail Niki and Iggy, but Alice quickly lost them, but Theo was able to pick Niki and Iggy up. The white terrier was waiting next to the bouncer.

Alice broke off to intercept Julie and her data at Julie's house, where he would undoubtedly be dropping her off with at best a kiss goodnight at the door. Julie couldn't be caught before she went in, but her boyfriend could. The boyfriend, a vampire poseur going by the name of "Wolf." Wolf was really not up to resisting a well built woman in tight leather sitting on his hood at night, wanting to talk to him. He spilled the beans, telling Alice where Iggy lived and letting her know that he was just a little too into the Vampire scene, going all the way to veneers and keeping inside during the day. Wolf was feeling a little over-confident, and asked Alice for her phone number, which was not forthcoming. The terrier waited at perfect heel next to Alice and watched wolf through the conversation, occasionally licking his nose.

Alice hot-footed it back to where Theo was watching Iggy's house and got the low-down. The neighborhood is run down, fading residential trending to industrial. It's also firmly in Don Korino's territory, who provides a fine selection of narcotics and prostitutes for the discerning degenerate. Niki's car is parked in Iggy's driveway, and the inside of the house is lit by a fireplace or candles.

Alice wanted a closer look to make sure Niki was okay (and hey, Iggy might have his clothes off). She looked in the window, and saw that Iggy was feeding on Niki, who seemed to be enjoy it. At the same time, Theo saw somebody looking in another window. He sent Alice a text message, but before she could check it, she heard breaking glass and a man shouted "Degenerate!" Then she saw a young man in the room with Iggy and Niki. The intruder tossed Niki aside and attacked Iggy.

While the boys were distracted, Alice took this opportunity to rescue Niki. Theo fired up the getaway car and tore off with the girls to deliver Niki to home. They took her to the church across from Cranbrook to check her out, sober her up, and try to talk sense into her about the wisdom of dating a vampire. The girl was moderately receptive, and since she seemed to be moderately coherent they delivered her home. The terrier kept a close eye on Niki while Alice rendered aid to Niki.

Niki's parents were happy to have their girl back and safe, but upset to learn that she hadn't been safe. Alice arranged to have half of her fee paid that night as a precaution against further weirdness. The dog watched the conversation for a while, but then took to sniffing around the room.

Alice went back to the club and tried to talk to the staff. A waitress met out back was able to provide a little bit of information about Iggy. She approached the bartender, hoping for a bit of camaraderie from a fellow barkeep. She was disappointed in that aim though, because the bartender wouldn't talk about a regular patron with an unknown busybody.

Alice went out to talk with the bouncer, who was being watched expectantly by the white terrier. The bouncer liked the dog and took a shine to Alice, and was able to tell her that Iggy was a serial monogamist. Girls came and went. Iggy would go with them for a while, drop them, and after a while they would stop coming around.

The session ended with two of the four set-pieces complete, and six experience points awarded. There may be an additional point to Theo for his quick thinking that I hadn't anticipated.

As a post-script, this session really helped me realize that Robin Laws' set piece planning method, including the transitions between scenes based on the various possible outcomes, is a really good way to plan an adventure. Check out the Adventure Planner links above to grab the forms I use to plan my adventures.
