1/31/2009 Session Summary

The St. Theresa Orphanage was plagued by a ghost, which attempted to strangle Sister Catherine with her own bedsheets. Sister Agnes, the leader of the orphanage, called Theo to see if he could help with the situation.

Theo detected that some sort of spell that seemed similar to the Zombie spell had been used on Sister Catherine's cell, and that some manner of incorporeal entity had been bound there. It didn't overtly threaten Theo, but it didn't really care for him either. He also detected a magical smell similar to what he found when he tried to track the originator of the threatening letter to his daughter.

Dispelling spirits isn't part of Theo's magical repetoire, so he called on David Brooks, his supervising investigator at Black Cat, for advice. The use of a priest was discussed, but per David a priest wasn't really the thing here, because the exorcist had to really believe that the evil spirit is there, and that the exorcism will work. Belief in God is a good deal different than believing in an actual malevolent spirit that likes to strangle nuns and needs to go now. It is agreed that David will come and guide Theo through the exorcism, since Theo has no doubts about the existence of the spirit or its need to go.

After some heavy duty diplomacy with Sister Agnes to allow somebody besides a priest to do an exorcism, including a poor reaction to Alice and an eleventh hour save by Theo, David was allowed onto the property to assist Theo.

Alice was dispatched to keep the nuns and the children occupied, far away from the nun's dormitory. Theo gave her instructions on what an attack by a ghost would look like, and what to do about it.

Theo began the exorcism, with David's guidance. The ghost was not especially receptive to this, and threw everything in the room at Theo during the exorcism. Fortunately a nun's cell is a pretty spartan affair, so a little dodging was necessary, but Theo's strong will kept him from faltering. The ghost was exorcised without serious incident, other than a wicked blow from a hurled lamp.

Eight experience points were given, one of which Theo was required to spent for Religious Ritual, as part of learning the rite of exorcism.
